Protection Economics Model

Test the business case.
See the assumptions.

Use your own loss history and program costs to compare hypothetical outcomes. Start with blank fields, or load a clearly labeled example. No universal loss rate or reduction assumption is applied.

Start here: explore the sample, then use your records.

  1. Load the sample data below to see a complete hypothetical calculation and visual comparison.
  2. Replace the annual baseline with shipment count, average value, gross losses, recoveries, and the share of net losses your proposed protection scope addresses.
  3. Estimate the full program cost using an all-in cost per protected shipment, or enter a detailed annual cost breakdown. Include customer effort and implementation where relevant.
  4. Test effectiveness and your return target. The model shows break-even and the reduction required to meet that target. Validate assumptions through a pilot.

The sample assumes 100,000 annual shipments at $15,000 average value, gross losses equal to 7% of shipped value, no baseline recoveries, all losses within scope, and $100 per protected shipment. All are editable planning assumptions. The sample is a demonstration of the mathematics, not an industry benchmark, a forecast, or a Cortrex performance claim. A benefit/cost multiple of 3× equals 200% net ROI; 300% net ROI requires 4× benefits. Your purchasing hurdle may differ.

Understand the unit economics first.

Load the hypothetical sample or enter your figures below. Annual volume remains editable.

Loss exposure is an annual average across the protected shipments—not the loss incurred on every shipment. Unit results use the selected scenario and are not a forecast or a price quotation. See the annual totals below for full program cost and all five scenarios.

Your baseline — annual figures in USD

Enter numbers with or without commas—for example, 10,000 or 10000. Amounts are shown with commas when you leave a field. Dollar amounts are in USD.

Start with your own records. Recoveries include recognized reimbursements on a consistent basis. The addressed share applies to net losses, not shipment volume. For a targeted deployment, use evidence about the protected group to estimate its share of losses; reducing protected volume does not automatically reduce network loss exposure. Current spend is shown separately and is not automatically counted as a saving.

Estimated protection program cost

The sample uses $100 per protected shipment as an owner-supplied planning estimate, not a fixed price or quotation. Actual costs vary with protection level, technology, device ownership or reuse, integration, and service responsibilities. Include all incremental costs; use the detailed option if they cannot reasonably be represented by one all-in amount.

Test five relative loss-reduction scenarios

The sample tests 20%, 25%, 30%, 35%, and 40% relative reductions in addressed net losses. These are owner-selected what-if assumptions, not measured effectiveness or probability forecasts. Loss avoidance is separate from existing recoveries and reimbursements.

Your investment hurdle

Benefits here are avoided net losses only. The target is a purchasing criterion, not an expected outcome.

Loss reduction needed for your target

Enter your figures

Your target multiple × annual incremental cost ÷ addressed annual net losses.

Visual bars show progress toward the selected benefit/cost target, capped at 100%. The numeric multiple shows the full result.
